A Music Town That Grew Into a Business Capital

Austin still calls itself the live music capital of the world, and on an ordinary Wednesday you can hear that claim defended on half a dozen stages within a mile of each other. What changed is everything around the music. In fifteen years the city absorbed Tesla, Oracle, Apple and a great deal of venture money, and the skyline, the restaurants and the hotel inventory all moved with it. The result is a place with two identities stacked on top of each other: the Texas town of taco trailers, spring fed swimming holes and honky tonks, and the corporate capital of rooftop bars and convention weeks. Which one you meet depends almost entirely on the dates you pick.

The planning decision: your dates are set by the festival calendar

Austin is one of the few American cities where a handful of weeks effectively govern the entire hotel market. South by Southwest, in March, fills every downtown room and pushes rates and minimum stays to levels unrelated to the rest of the year. Austin City Limits, across two October weekends in Zilker Park, does the same at a smaller scale, and the Formula One weekend at Circuit of the Americas does it again in the autumn. Add University of Texas home football Saturdays and a dense convention calendar, and the number of ordinary weekends is smaller than visitors expect. Decide first whether you are coming for one of those weeks or steering around all of them.

Two good stretches, and a summer that is not negotiable

March through May and late September through November are the comfortable months, with warm days, cool evenings and the Hill Country at its best. Late March and April bring bluebonnets along the ranch roads west of town, which is a real reason to time a visit. June through September is the hard part: daytime temperatures sit above one hundred degrees for long stretches, the afternoon is effectively indoors, and anything outdoors moves to early morning or after dark. Winter is mild, quiet and underrated, with cool bright days and the lowest rates of the year outside the festival weeks.

Where to base: downtown, South Congress or east of the river

Downtown puts you next to the convention center, the Second Street shops and the bars on Rainey Street, and it is the right base for business and for festival weeks. South Congress, across the river, is the walkable stretch of shops, the Continental Club and the food most visitors picture. East Austin holds the newer restaurants, the breweries and the smaller music rooms, and feels the least polished. West of downtown, Zilker Park and Barton Springs are the reason people move here. Austin Bergstrom International sits about twenty minutes out, and Interstate 35 through the middle of the city is best avoided in the late afternoon.

Stay strategy in a market that recently grew up

Hotel Saint Cecilia and Hotel San Jose, both on South Congress, are the character choices and the ones that book first. The Driskill, on Congress Avenue since 1886, is the grand old room downtown. Austin Proper Hotel and the Four Seasons Hotel Austin on the lakefront cover the modern and the corporate end respectively. Commodore Perry Estate, in Hyde Park, is a walled estate turned hotel and the quietest option in the city. Out in the hills, Miraval Austin makes a different case for a wellness led few days. During SXSW and ACL the good rooms go early and the terms harden.

When to begin

Three to four months for an ordinary weekend. South by Southwest, Austin City Limits and the Formula One weekend want nine to twelve, and the better hotels apply minimum stays and non refundable terms across them. Corporate groups and buyouts should start a year ahead. Food matters as much as rooms here: the barbecue institutions still run on queues rather than reservations and reward an early start, while the dinner tables worth having are gone weeks out. We book the restaurants alongside the hotel rather than after it.

Four experiences worth building the days around

• A night built across two or three rooms, starting at the Continental Club on South Congress and finishing at a late set east of the river.
• A Hill Country day west of town for the wineries around Fredericksburg and a swim at one of the spring fed pools, with any access permits confirmed for your dates.
• Barbecue taken seriously, either the morning queue at one of the Central Texas institutions in town or the drive out to Lockhart or Driftwood.
• The bat colony leaving the Congress Avenue Bridge at dusk between March and October, watched from the water rather than the sidewalk above it.

Who this trip suits

Austin suits music travelers and food travelers above all, business travelers extending a work trip into a weekend, and groups and celebrations, which the city handles cheerfully. It suits couples who want a city break with no formality to it. Families do well with older children, given the swimming and the trails, though the bar districts at night are not a family environment.

When another plan may fit better

Travelers who want the music with deeper history and a denser walkable core will get more from New Orleans, and we will say so. If the trip is really about museums and galleries, Houston is the Texas city that delivers that. Anyone set on July or August should understand that the middle of the day is not usable outdoors, and anyone hoping for a quiet March weekend should check the calendar before booking.
