Guilin, River Light and Karst Country

Guilin is a gateway to one of China's most recognisable landscapes, but the destination becomes more rewarding when the Li River is treated as a living route rather than a single scenic cruise. Karst peaks, bamboo, villages, and the soft changes of the river light create a natural pace of their own.

Three nights is a good starting point, with time for Guilin, the river, and Yangshuo. Add a night when the group wants a private boat, a countryside ride, or a slower look at the villages between the main stops.

• Fly into: Guilin Liangjiang International Airport, or arrive by high-speed rail from other Chinese cities. Build the route around the onward transfer to Yangshuo.

• Best months: Spring and autumn are comfortable for river days and cycling. Summer is greener but wetter and warmer. Winter can be misty and quieter.

See the river as a route

Choose Yangshuo with care

Yangshuo has the broadest choice of hotels, restaurants, and outdoor activities, but the centre can feel busy. The right stay may sit outside town, close enough for dinner but far enough away for the river and fields to remain the view. Ask what the property feels like at night, not only what it looks like in a photograph.

Keep one day on land

A countryside day gives the river context. Use a private guide to choose a village road, a market, a short cycle, or a quiet walk rather than chasing every viewpoint. The experience should feel connected to the landscape, not like a list of stops made from a moving vehicle.
