Siwa is far enough from Egypt’s main route to feel like a separate country of palms, salt lakes, mud-brick walls, and desert light. The oasis sits in the Western Desert near the Libyan border, shaped by springs and agriculture as much as by the dunes beyond it.

• Fly into: Siwa is reached overland, usually from Cairo or Alexandria. The road transfer is long, so plan it with a proper vehicle, a good driver, and realistic arrival timing.
• Trip length: Two or three nights for the core experience. Four nights gives you a better chance to slow down, explore the desert, and enjoy the oasis between outings.
• Best months: October through April brings the most comfortable daytime temperatures. Summer is extremely hot and requires a very different rhythm.
• Getting around: Private vehicles, local 4x4s, and bicycles are useful for different parts of the oasis. Your host can arrange the right option for each day.
• Money: Egypt uses the Egyptian pound. Carry enough cash for the full stay, as card facilities are limited and the nearest reliable services are far away.
• What to reserve: A characterful desert lodge, the road transfer, a trusted local host, a desert outing, and any special meal or wellness treatment in advance.

Take the long way in

Siwa is not a place to squeeze between two city hotels. The road from Cairo or Alexandria takes patience, and the last stretch feels increasingly remote. Travel with a private driver, stop when useful, and arrive with enough time to settle before the first excursion.

Days in Siwa are built around shade, water, and the position of the sun. Walk through the palm groves, pause at a spring, visit the old settlement, and allow the afternoon heat to pass without feeling that you have lost time. This is a destination where doing less often gives you more of its character.
