Cape Town, Weather Permitting

Cape Town gives you a mountain in the middle of the city, two oceans, and weather with a mind of its own. It is the rare destination where the daily plan should stay flexible on purpose: the mountain decides when it wants to be climbed, the sea decides when the Robben Island boats run, and the summer southeaster locals call the Cape Doctor decides which beach is usable. Built loosely, a week here outdelivers almost any city break.

The seasons run upside down

Summer is November through March. December and January are the festive peak, when the city fills with returning South Africans and the top hotels sell out close to a year ahead. February and March are warmer and calmer, and locals will tell you those are the secret. Winter, June through August, is green and moody, with rain arriving in fronts and clear days in between, and rates at their softest.

Winter also opens whale season: southern right whales gather along the Hermanus coast from about June to November, peaking in September and October, an easy day trip or overnight from town. The shoulder seasons are especially appealing, April to May and September to October, when the light goes golden and the crowds have gone home. Pack for four seasons in a day whatever the month you choose; the locals do.

The safari math

Most Cape Town trips carry a safari on the back, and the calendars disagree: the city peaks in southern summer while the Kruger lowveld is at its best in the dry winter, June through September. The shoulder months reconcile the two, or you accept a green season safari, which is lusher, cheaper, and full of newborn animals. Count on four or five nights in the city and two in the winelands before the flight north. Nonstops from New York and Atlanta land you in Cape Town without a Johannesburg connection, roughly fifteen hours southbound.

The mountain rule, and other local physics

Take Table Mountain on the first clear morning, never the last day; the cableway closes when the wind gets up, and it gets up often. Book Robben Island ahead but hold it loosely, since swells cancel sailings. Drive the peninsula to Cape Point early in the trip, with a stop for the penguins at Boulders Beach, and keep one afternoon entirely unplanned. The city's best restaurant tables now book out like London's, so the most important reservations should be secured when the hotel is confirmed. Cape Town rewards the traveler who leaves room for the good accident.

Ellerman House in Bantry Bay has thirteen rooms, a private South African art collection that rivals the galleries, and the feel of a friend's improbably good house; it is a Relais & Châteaux member and a strong choice for couples. Belmond Mount Nelson is the pink grande dame under the mountain. One&Only Cape Town suits families who want the V&A Waterfront within walking distance, and The Silo, stacked above the Zeitz MOCAA museum, is the design lover's pick. In the winelands, Franschhoek works especially well for two unhurried nights, with La Residence and Leeu Estates among the standout options.
