The Most Dependable Weather in the Country

There is no serious argument about this one. San Diego has the most consistent weather of any major city in the continental United States: highs in the seventies for most of the year, low humidity, a cool ocean and something close to three hundred days of sun. That single fact shapes everything about how the city travels. It is why the zoo and the parks work in February, why the beaches never fully empty, and why San Diego is the American coastal destination that asks least of a traveler. The airport sits ten minutes from downtown, the driving is easy by California standards, and almost nothing about a trip here is difficult.

The planning decision: which stretch of coast is yours

San Diego is a set of distinct places that happen to share a county. La Jolla, north along the water, has the coves, the sea lions and a walkable village, and is the best base for couples. Coronado, across the bay, feels like an island, with a wide flat beach and the Hotel del at the center of it, and is the strongest choice for families. Downtown and the Gaslamp Quarter hold the nightlife, the ballpark and the convention center. Del Mar and Rancho Santa Fe, up in north county, are quieter, greener and more residential. Choosing between them decides the character of the week.

May Gray, June Gloom, and the months that avoid them

The honest caveat about the perfect weather is the marine layer. Through May and June a low cloud deck sits over the coast most mornings, and on the beach it often does not burn off at all, which surprises people who booked for early summer sunshine. Inland it clears by late morning. September and October are the best months of the year here: warm, clear, uncrowded and with the ocean at its warmest. July and August are excellent and busy. Winter is mild and mostly dry, and gray whales pass down the coast from roughly December into March, which is a real reason to come off season.

Where to base, and how far the coast really runs

The county stretches a long way, and forty minutes of driving separates places that look adjacent on a map. La Jolla to downtown is about twenty minutes without traffic, Coronado to downtown about fifteen over the bridge, and Del Mar another twenty five north of La Jolla. Point Loma and Little Italy are where much of the current food sits. San Diego International is unusually central, which makes short trips genuinely worth it. The Mexican border is about twenty minutes from downtown, and crossing to Valle de Guadalupe wine country or the Ensenada coast is a straightforward day if it is planned properly rather than improvised.

Stay strategy across four very different bases

Hotel del Coronado is the landmark, a Victorian beach hotel with the best family beach in the region in front of it. La Valencia sits in the middle of La Jolla village above the cove. The Lodge at Torrey Pines pairs a craftsman style hotel with the golf course beside it. Inland, the Fairmont Grand Del Mar is the resort choice for a full property stay, and Rancho Valencia in Rancho Santa Fe is the quiet, adult, tennis and spa alternative. When to begin

Three to four months covers most of the year comfortably. Summer weekends, the winter holidays and the July convention weeks want nine to twelve months, and Coronado in particular sells its best rooms far in advance. Del Mar during the summer racing season fills north county. Zoo and safari park timings, Balboa Park museum days and the popular boat trips are all easier with a plan than without one, and the whale watching operators in season should be booked ahead for the small boats rather than the large ones.

• The San Diego Zoo taken first thing in the morning, with Balboa Park's museums and gardens saved for a separate visit rather than crammed into the same afternoon.
• A La Jolla morning: the cove, the sea caves by kayak and the sea lions, followed by lunch in the village.
• A day across the border into Valle de Guadalupe for the wineries and the open air kitchens, arranged with the crossing and the driver planned in advance.
• Sunset from Torrey Pines or Sunset Cliffs, then dinner in Little Italy or Point Loma.

When another plan may fit better

If you want a glamorous beach city with nightlife at the center of it, Miami is the honest answer, because San Diego is early to bed by comparison. If warm swimming water matters, the Pacific here is cold most of the year and Oahu or the Mexican Caribbean will serve you better.
