Singapore, Properly Given Time

Singapore suffers from its own efficiency. Travelers treat it as a layover, a clean airport and one night at Marina Bay, and miss that this is the easiest great city in Asia: hawker stalls holding Michelin stars, a colonial quarter kept beautifully alive, bars ranked among the best anywhere, and orchids growing wild over highway overpasses. Give it three nights and it quietly becomes the stop people talk about most when they get home.

Weather that never changes, a calendar that does

Sitting almost on the equator, Singapore holds steady around 88 degrees every day of the year, with a thunderstorm most afternoons that clears as quickly as it arrives. November through January is the wetter monsoon stretch, February through April the driest. What actually moves the market is the calendar. The Formula 1 night race in late September or early October multiplies rates at the marina hotels and sells the good rooms out the better part of a year ahead, and Chinese New Year in late January or February books the city solid. Two practical notes while we are at it: pack for the tropics but dress for the icebox, because interiors here run cold, and treat the afternoon storm as intermission rather than problem, an hour in a shophouse cafe while it passes.

Heritage suite or island villa

The stopover that deserves better

Singapore Airlines flies nonstop from New York and the West Coast, eighteen hours and remarkably civilized, which makes the city the natural hinge of any Southeast Asia or Australia itinerary. Two nights covers the essentials. Three or four lets you eat properly, and the eating deserves its own plan: tasting counters should be booked weeks ahead, then leave lunches open for the hawker centers, Maxwell, Lau Pa Sat, wherever the morning takes you. The distance between a four dollar laksa and a three star tasting menu, sometimes inside the same afternoon, is the whole point of this city. It pairs with Bali, the Maldives, or Indochina without a wasted hour.
