The Island With the Other Weather

Koh Samui sits in the Gulf of Thailand, off the east coast of the isthmus, and that single geographic fact is the most useful thing to know about it. Thailand does not have one weather pattern, and the Gulf runs on a different calendar from Phuket and the Andaman coast on the other side. Travelers who assume otherwise arrive in the wrong month and are surprised. Beyond the weather, this is a large, developed, coconut covered island with its own international airport, a deep hotel market and beaches that vary enormously within a short drive of each other.

The planning decision: which coast, and what kind of week

Samui is big enough that the choice of beach is really the choice of holiday, and swapping later is awkward. Decide first whether you want a walkable town with restaurants at the door, a quiet bay where the resort is the day, or a villa above the water with a driver. Five to seven nights is the usual shape. The island also anchors a group: Koh Phangan is thirty minutes by boat, Koh Tao about ninety and the diving center of the Gulf, and Ang Thong marine park lies west. Two or three days on the water separate a good week here from a static one.

A rainfall calendar that runs opposite to the Andaman

This matters enough to state plainly. The wettest months on Samui are October, November and December, with November typically the heaviest, which is precisely when the Andaman coast is drying out and at its best. The Gulf's most reliable stretch is roughly January through April, hot, dry and calm, with February through April the driest and warmest. June through September is Samui's other good window: the southwest monsoon that soaks Phuket largely spares the Gulf, and this island stays broadly sunny with short showers while the west coast is wet. The practical rule is simple: if your dates fall between June and September, come here rather than the Andaman, and if they fall in November, do the reverse. Full moon dates on Koh Phangan also affect ferry traffic across the group.

Where to base, and the beaches that are not alike

Chaweng on the east coast is the longest beach and the busiest, with the main strip of restaurants, bars and shopping, and it suits travelers who want life outside the resort. Bophut on the north coast is calmer, with Fisherman's Village giving you a walkable evening of restaurants without the volume, and it is the best compromise for most parties. Choeng Mon in the northeast is a quiet cove near the airport. The south and west, around Taling Ngam and Lipa Noi, are the quiet end, with sunsets, shallower water and near total seclusion. Samui International is small, privately run and unusually pleasant, with direct flights from Bangkok, Singapore and Hong Kong. The cheaper alternative is a flight to Surat Thani and a ferry, a half day rather than an hour.

Stay strategy across a very deep market

The Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui sits on a private bay on the northwest tip in hillside villas with private pools and is the benchmark for couples. Six Senses Samui occupies the northern headland with the best views on the island. Conrad Koh Samui is on the southwest coast for sunsets. Cape Fahn holds a private island off Choeng Mon reached at low tide, and Anantara Bophut and Vana Belle cover the tier below. Samui also has one of the best private villa markets in Asia, staffed with a chef and a driver, and for families or groups the villa is often the better week.

When to begin

Four months for January through April, and six or more for the Christmas and New Year period, when the top villas and pool suites are gone very early. The June to September window is easier and better value. If a specific villa matters, work back further, since the good ones are a small and repeatedly booked set. Ferry and internal flight schedules shift seasonally and should be confirmed for your dates.

• A private long tail or speedboat day into Ang Thong marine park, the forty something limestone islands west of Samui, leaving early to reach the emerald lagoon before the group boats.
• A morning circuit of the island by car for Na Muang waterfalls, the big Buddha at Bang Rak and the Lamai coast, done before the afternoon heat.
• Koh Tao for a day of diving or snorkeling, or Koh Phangan for the quiet north beaches rather than the full moon crowd.
• A Thai cooking morning that starts in the Nathon market, then a long afternoon back at the beach.

Who this trip suits

Samui suits couples and honeymooners, who have the pick of the villa resorts. It suits families, given the calm north coast bays and the villa market. It suits groups, for the same reason. It suits travelers coming from Bangkok who want a short flight rather than a long transfer. And it suits anyone whose only available dates fall in the European summer, which is the season this island quietly owns.

When another plan may fit better

If your dates are in November, go to Phuket and the Andaman islands instead, because the Gulf will be wet. If you want dramatic limestone scenery from your room, Krabi and Phang Nga are more striking than anything on Samui. And if the full moon party is the reason for the trip, book Koh Phangan directly rather than commuting to it.
