Phuket
Phuket and Koh Samui Are Never Good at the Same Time
Thailand does not have one rainy season, it has two, running on opposite calendars either side of the isthmus. Phuket sits on the Andaman coast, where rainfall peaks in September. Koh Samui sits in the Gulf, where it peaks in November. Almost every itinerary that strings the two islands together in a single two week trip gets one of them badly wrong, and the traveler is left assuming Thai beaches are a gamble. They are not. They are a choice, and the month makes it for you. Once that is settled, the second question is which ten miles of a very large island you actually book, because Phuket contains two entirely different holidays.
Know before you go
- Fly into Phuket International, code HKT, in Mai Khao subdistrict about 32 km north of Phuket Town. The airport sits at the island's northern tip while most of the serious resort inventory is central or south, so island transfers run longer than the map suggests. Budget the time and book a car rather than improvising at arrivals.
- Trip length Five to seven nights. Below five you lose a day to arrival, a day to departure and the one boat day that justifies coming this far, which leaves two on a sunbed.
- Best months November through April is the dry stretch and the reason to come. Roughly May through October is wet, and September is the peak of Andaman rainfall and the single month to refuse outright. Phuket takes about 2,220 mm of rain a year.
- The monsoon rule Phuket peaks wet in September; Koh Samui peaks wet in November. If your dates fall in September, move the beach week to the Gulf. If they fall in November, come here. Combining both islands in one trip means accepting the wrong season for one of them.
- Rain shape Phuket's wet season is long rather than intense, spread across six to eight months rather than concentrated into two. A June or July trip works perfectly well with honest expectations, which a Gulf November does not.
- Peak pricing November to mid February is peak in every sense: best weather, highest rates, tightest availability. The festive two weeks are held six months or more ahead by repeat guests. This is not a shoulder season opportunity, it is a book early destination.
- Entry US passport holders enter visa exempt for 60 days, needing six months of passport validity beyond arrival and one blank page. The 60 day allowance is under review, and we confirm it against the official source when you book.
- Arrival card The Thailand Digital Arrival Card is mandatory for every foreign national and free. It is filed on the immigration.go.th portal and only in the three days before arrival, which means it cannot be handled months out with the rest of the paperwork.
- Money The Thai baht runs at roughly 33 to the US dollar. Immigration may ask a visa exempt arrival for an onward ticket and the cash equivalent of THB 20,000 per person or THB 40,000 per family.
- Temple dress Shoulders and knees covered at the island's temples and at the Big Buddha, for men and women, and it is enforced at the door. Carry a light long sleeved shirt in the car on any day that includes a temple stop.
- Songkran Thai New Year falls 13 to 15 April in 2027, midweek, and the practical national shutdown runs the Monday before to the Friday after. Domestic flights sell out weeks ahead, so any island connection through Bangkok in that week needs booking very early.
September is the month to refuse, and June is not
The most useful thing anyone can tell you about a Phuket week is which months to take off the table. September is the peak of Andaman rainfall and there is no way to plan around it: the sea is rough, the boat days that make the trip get canceled, and the swimming is poor. Move it to the Gulf, which is in a dry stretch then. What deserves more nuance is the rest of the wet season. Because Phuket's rain is spread thin across six to eight months rather than dumped into two, June and July behave nothing like September. You get bright mornings, heavy afternoon rain some days and not others, a green landscape, and rates well below the winter. With realistic expectations it is one of the better value weeks in Asia. The mistake is treating May through October as a single undifferentiated block.
The airport is at the wrong end, and the coast decides the holiday
There are two Phukets and they barely touch. The loud one occupies a few miles of the west coast and is what everybody has been warned about. The other is quiet headlands to the north, villas with private pools above near empty bays, and boats that reach the karsts of Phang Nga before the day trippers arrive. Because the airport sits at the northern tip and most of the good inventory is central or south, where you base changes both your transfer time and your evenings. The northern beaches give you seclusion and short runs from the airport. The center and south give you more to walk to and a longer drive in. Neither is wrong, but choosing after you have booked is expensive.
Four addresses and who each one is really for
Amanpuri is where the Aman idea began, above Pansea Beach, and it remains the most composed address on the island; it suits couples who want quiet and are not looking for a scene. Trisara next door has some of the largest villas with private pools in Thailand and residences that work for several generations traveling together. Rosewood Phuket wraps around its own bay and is the romantic pick, warmer in tone than the Amans. Six Senses Yao Noi is not on Phuket at all: a boat transfer puts you on an island between the limestone towers, trading beach quality for the best views in the region and near total seclusion. And do not underestimate the eating. The old shophouse quarter of Phuket Town holds one of the great southern Thai food cultures, hotter and more interesting than any resort menu, and a guided morning through its markets is often the best half day of the week.
Planning brief
Phuket only works when the month, the coast and the boat days are chosen together. The island is large enough that the wrong base quietly changes the whole trip.
- Best suited to: beach weeks with real hotel quality; families and multigenerational groups; wellness stays; villa travelers; anyone pairing a city with a coast.
- Decisions to settle early: Andaman or Gulf for your dates; north, center or south coast; villa versus resort; how many boat days; festive period holds.
- Arrival and routing: confirm which Bangkok airport your connection uses; allow for a long island transfer from the northern tip; file the arrival card inside its three day window; book the boat captain before the hotel in high season.
Right side of the isthmus first, right ten miles of the island second
In that order, because no hotel is good enough to fix the wrong coast in the wrong month. Send the dates, who is traveling and whether the week should be spent still or on the water. The boat captain who knows when the lagoons empty out will matter more to you than the room category ever does.
If your dates land in September or the early autumn, read our Koh Samui guide instead, since the Gulf is dry when the Andaman is not. Our luxury leisure travel planning sequences the beach with Bangkok so the whole route falls in the right season.

Is Phuket ruined?
No, but the version people mean when they ask is real and it is concentrated. The mass tourism sits on a few miles of the west coast, and you can spend a week on Phuket without going anywhere near it. The island is large, the resort inventory at the top end is genuinely excellent, the spa and food culture is deep, and the escape routes into empty water off Phang Nga are all still there. What has changed is that arriving without a plan no longer works. Booking the wrong ten miles is what produces the disappointed review, not the island.
Can I combine Phuket and Koh Samui in one trip?
You can, and in most months you should not. They sit on opposite coasts with opposite rainfall calendars. Phuket's rain peaks in September; Koh Samui's peaks in November, and it peaks hard. A two island, two week trip therefore means accepting the wrong season for one half of it. The better structure is one island chosen for your dates, then Bangkok or the north for contrast. If you genuinely want two beaches, stay on the same side: pair Phuket with the islands of Phang Nga, or pair Samui with its Gulf neighbors.
Which coast of Phuket should I base on?
The northern beaches for seclusion and the shortest transfer, since the airport sits at the island's northern tip. The center and south for more to walk to in the evening, at the cost of a longer drive in from arrivals. If it is a first Thai beach trip and you want the resort to be the holiday, go north and stay put. If you want to eat out, see Phuket Town properly and move around, go central. What does not work is booking a quiet northern headland and then planning dinner in town every night, because that drive gets old by the third evening.
Is a private villa better than a resort here?
For four or more adults traveling together, usually yes. Phuket has one of the deepest villa markets in Asia, staffed with a cook and a driver, and the arithmetic beats four resort suites while giving you a kitchen, a pool nobody else is using and somewhere to eat breakfast in a dressing gown. For two people, the resort wins: you get the spa, the restaurants and the beach club without having to organize anything yourself. The failure case is a couple in a large villa a long drive from anywhere, which turns a holiday into self catering.
When is the best time to visit Phuket?
November through April is the dry stretch and the reason to come, with November to mid February the peak for weather and rates. September is the wettest month and the one to refuse. June and July work with honest expectations, because the rain spreads thin across the wet season. Read our two week Thailand itinerary or compare Koh Samui.
