Fiji, Where the Welcome Is the Luxury

Every island nation claims warmth. Fiji is the one where the claim holds up. By the second morning the staff know your children's names, your coffee order, and which chair you claimed on the beach, and none of it feels rehearsed. The hard part is not deciding to go. It is choosing among three hundred islands when perhaps a dozen justify crossing the Pacific.

Those dozen sort into clear camps: the Mamanucas and Yasawas close to Nadi, reached by a short seaplane hop; the far north around Vanua Levu and Taveuni, where the diving turns serious; and the private islands that operate as their own small worlds. May through October, and the school-holiday trap

Fiji's dry season runs May through October: trade winds, low humidity, days in the low eighties. November through April is the warm, wet half of the year, greener and softer on rates, and it carries the cyclone risk, which is why we recommend appropriate travel protection and keep the plans flexible. The trap most Americans miss is that late June through July overlaps school holidays across major Australian states and New Zealand, with exact dates varying by jurisdiction and year. The best family villas on the private islands are committed six to twelve months out for those weeks, and the multi-bedroom residences go first.

The rare long haul that works in one day

Fiji Airways serves Nadi nonstop from Los Angeles and San Francisco, with schedules that can change by season. Its Dallas/Fort Worth service is scheduled to end September 5, 2026, so we confirm the operating route for your dates. On a well-timed arrival, you can clear customs and continue by seaplane, helicopter, domestic flight, or boat. Mamanuca resorts are fifteen to thirty minutes by seaplane or helicopter, Kokomo runs its own approximately forty-five-minute flight, and the northern islands require another transfer.

Plan five to seven nights, and if you dive, say so early. The soft coral of Rainbow Reef and the manta season from May through October are worth routing an itinerary around, and they favor different islands than a pure beach trip would. Fiji also makes an elegant pause on the way to or from New Zealand and Australia; three nights on an island here turns a punishing itinerary into a civilized one, and that stopover can work well.

Island options

Laucala Island is closed for extensive enhancements, and Tourism Fiji says it is scheduled to reopen October 1, 2027. The former COMO management agreement has ended; we confirm the reopening timetable before building a trip around the island. Kokomo Private Island is a strong choice for families and divers, with a serious marine program and mantas in season. Six Senses Fiji on Malolo suits couples who want wellness with an easy transfer. Vomo is the barefoot compromise, a private island feel within thirty minutes of the airport.

Worth watching: One&Only has announced its first Fiji resort for the Yasawas later this decade, a clear signal of where the archipelago is headed. Getting to know Fiji before that wave arrives is part of the appeal right now.
