The Part of Japan That Was Its Own Kingdom

Okinawa sits closer to Taipei than to Tokyo, and for four and a half centuries it was not Japan at all but the Ryukyu Kingdom, trading between China, Japan and Southeast Asia and building a culture that shows it. The language, the music, the architecture, the pottery, the food and the pace are all distinct, and travelers who arrive expecting a Japanese beach resort find something considerably more interesting. Add coral reefs in genuinely good condition, a chain of islands running southwest almost to Taiwan, and a subtropical climate, and Okinawa becomes the only part of the country that does a beach trip properly.

The planning decision: the main island, the Kerama, or the far southwest

This is one decision and it shapes everything. The main island holds Naha, the historic sites, the resort coast at Onna and the aquarium, and you can drive its length in around two hours. The Kerama islands are forty to sixty minutes by ferry from Naha, have some of the clearest water in Japan and work as day trips or as a short stay. The Yaeyama group, around Ishigaki, Iriomote and Taketomi, is roughly an hour by air from Naha and is the real island trip: jungle rivers, buffalo carts on coral lanes, and reefs with almost nobody on them. A strong first visit takes the main island and one island group rather than trying to hold all three.

The good months, and the season that can rewrite your itinerary

April into early June is excellent, warm and swimmable with the water already up. The rainy season sits roughly across May and June and is a nuisance rather than a disaster. From June through October the region is exposed to typhoons, with August and September the peak, and this is a real operational risk rather than a formality: flights are cancelled, ferries stop before the airport does, and a small island can become genuinely unreachable for a couple of days. Anyone traveling in that window should carry slack at the end of the itinerary and appropriate insurance, and the specifics should be confirmed close to travel. October into early December is the best stretch of the year. Winter is mild in the sixties, too cool for most swimming, but excellent for whale watching from January into March.

Getting there, and the shape of the main island

Naha is about two and a half hours from Tokyo Haneda and around two from Osaka, with frequent service, and it is the hub for onward island flights and ferries. On the main island a car is close to essential, since the monorail only serves Naha. Two things surprise first visitors. The center of the island carries a large American military presence, which is a visible and permanent part of the landscape here and a live subject locally, and the traffic on the main highway north can be slow because of it. And the good beaches are mostly on the west coast, north of the airport, which is where the resorts sit.

Stay strategy across a very long island chain

Halekulani Okinawa sits on a good stretch of the Onna coast and is the most polished resort on the main island. Hoshinoya Okinawa is the more designed and more Japanese alternative nearby, and The Ritz Carlton Okinawa sits inland above a golf course rather than on the sand, which matters. Busena Terrace remains the classic. On Miyako, Iraph Sui is small and quiet. In the Yaeyama, Hoshinoya Taketomi Island occupies a village of its own on a coral island of three hundred people and is the most distinctive property in the region. Beachfront and category differences are real here, and the island you choose matters more than the brand.

When to begin

Six months is sensible for spring and autumn. Golden Week at the end of April, Obon in August and the New Year period want considerably longer, because domestic demand for Okinawa is enormous and the good rooms go to Japanese travelers first. Island flights and ferry timetables are seasonal and thin out in winter, so those are held alongside the hotels rather than after. Diving with a reputable operator, particularly anything at Yonaguni or the outer reefs, is arranged in advance with certification details submitted.

Four experiences worth building the days around

• Shuri Castle in Naha, where the reconstruction after the 2019 fire is itself visible and worth understanding.
• A diving or snorkeling day in the Kerama islands, which is the clearest water most people will see in Japan.
• Taketomi or Iriomote for a day, for coral walled lanes, mangrove rivers and a version of Japan almost nobody photographs.
• An Okinawan dinner with awamori, which shares almost nothing with the food of the main islands.

Who this trip suits

Okinawa suits divers and snorkelers unreservedly. It suits families, because the water is calm and the resorts are set up for children. It suits Japan repeaters looking for a fourth or fifth trip that is not another city. It suits honeymooners who want a beach without leaving the country. And it suits anyone interested in a history that Japan itself argues about.

When another plan may fit better

Be honest about expectations. These are good beaches and clear water, but the resorts are Japanese resorts rather than overwater villas, and the main island is developed and built up in stretches. If a flawless reef and villa holiday is what you want, the Maldives answer that directly. If you are traveling between June and October and cannot absorb a disrupted flight, choose another month or another destination. And if this is a first trip to Japan, Kyoto should come first.
